Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender Are Caught Between Two Worlds in Exclusive 'The Light Between Oceans' Clip

Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender face a momentous parental decision in The Light Between Oceans, the new film from Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines director Derek Cianfrance. Ahead of its theatrical debut later this week, Yahoo Movies now debuts an exclusive clip (watch it above), which hints at the torn-between-two-worlds circumstances the A-list stars’ characters must come to grips with in this post-WWI drama.

In the clip, dubbed “Happy Life on Janus,” Fassbender’s military vet Tom Sherbourne (now working as a lighthouse keeper off the coast of Western Australia) explains to his wife Isabel (Vikander) the meaning behind their island home’s name, Janus — a moniker tied to the word “January,” which reflects the idea of being caught between an outgoing past and an unfolding present/future. It also, as he says, reflects their island’s location between two distinct oceans — and, ultimately, will have meaning with regard to their forthcoming plight, when they take into their home an infant who washes ashore, only to come into contact years later with the baby’s birth mother (Rachel Weisz), who’s still searching for her missing child.

On the heels of its initial trailer (watch it below), this new clip from The Light Between Oceans suggests that Cianfrance’s film — whose leads began dating while working on the film in 2014 — is the sort of September drama that makes clear the summer movie season is over. It debuts in theaters this Friday, Sept. 2.
