Melissa McCarthy Not Least Bit Bothered by 'Ghostbusters' Backlash
Kristen Wiig has admitted it has bummed her out. Leslie Jones has almost quit Twitter because of it. And director Paul Feig has pleaded with haters to leave his cast alone.
Amid all the excitement over July’s all-female Ghostbusters reboot, there’s been some vociferous backlash, much of it tinged with sexism. The ugly reaction hasn’t gotten to Melissa McCarthy, though.
“I don’t even talk about it,” McCarthy told Yahoo Movies while promoting her new comedy, The Boss. “We had such a good time filming it. The movie’s really good. The four of us talk constantly, and are always sending each other dumb notes. I don’t pay attention to any of that stuff.
”[Ghostbusters] was a blast making, it was really fun and the movie’s going to be amazing.“
Despite a loud minority bent on bashing the action-comedy (which also stars Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth, and returns original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts in new roles), the film should be a whopping success if McCarthy’s track record is any indication. The actress has been a hit machine at the box office, beginning with 2011’s Bridesmaids ($169 million domestically) and continuing with Identity Thief ($134 million), The Heat ($159 million), and Spy ($110 million).
Asked if dismissing the Ghostbusters criticism is akin to brushing dirt off her shoulder, McCarthy countered: "It doesn’t even fall on my shoulder. Not even at all.”
Ghostbusters opens July 15. The Boss hits theaters April 8.
