Mel Gibson Shows No Mercy in 'Blood Father' Trailer

By Maria Cavassuto, Variety

If you’re looking to mess with anyone close to Mel Gibson’s character in his new film Blood Father, you’re going to have to deal with him first.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, the film stars Gibson as John Link, an ex-convict tattoo artist whose estranged daughter suddenly reenters his life — but not for breezy reasons.

His daughter, played by Erin Moriarty, hasn’t seen her father in years, but suddenly stumbles back into his life when a drug cartel — helmed by Diego Luna — is hunting her down for murder.

Set in an almost post-apocalyptic desert setting, reminiscent of Gibson’s 1979 action-thriller Mad Max, Gibson will fight to the death to protect his daughter. The film also stars William H. Macy and Michael Parks, and is penned by Peter Craig.

Coming five years after his attempt to redirect his acting career with Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, and after several public blunders, Blood Father might be the prescription the doctor ordered for Gibson’s career. Gibson only appeared in three films after The Beaver, including The Expendables 3 along with Sylvester Stallone.

Variety‘s critic Owen Gleiberman said of Gibson in his review of the film: “A grimy little pulp action thriller gives him the chance to show that he’s still got it.”
