For his new film Gold, Matthew McConaughey has acquired a beer belly, a receding hairline, and an atrocious taste in neckties. New photos from the New York City set show the former Magic Mike star looking down-and-out with an ill-fitting business suit and bad combover. It’s all part of the act: In Gold, McConaughey plays a struggling businessman who attempts to literally strike gold in the Indonesian jungle, with disastrous results.

Written and directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana), Gold is inspired by the true story of the Bre-X mining scandal. In 1993, a Filipino mining prospector declared the existence of a giant gold mine in Borneo, which was then purchased by a small Canadian mining company called Bre-X. Within four years, the company was worth billions of dollars. Unfortunately, the gold mine was a complete fraud, and the saga ended with one participant tried for insider trading, another dead from apparent suicide, and the Bre-X company folding. As subject material for a film, the story recalls John Huston’s 1948 drama The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, to which Gold has already drawn comparisons.

In addition to McConaughey, Gold stars Édgar Ramírez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), and Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four). The film is set for a fall 2016 release.
