Matt Damon Reflects on 'Good Will Hunting' Bench Scene Opposite Robin Williams

Matt Damon made a triumphant return to the franchise that first established him as an A-list action star with this past summer’s Jason Bourne, but the star truly owes his marquee career to 1996’s Good Will Hunting, which earned him and Ben Affleck Best Original Screenplay Oscars, as well as provided Robin Williams with the role that would finally earn him an Academy Award (for Best Supporting Actor). In a new chat with JOE.ie (watch the clip above), Damon reflected on that breakthrough hit, and specifically, on the memorable scene he shares with Williams — who died two years ago on Aug. 11, 2014 — on a park bench in Boston Commons. (Watch it below.)

As Damon remembers it, he basically stayed out of his co-star’s way — since it was “his” scene — and immediately knew, while working opposite Williams, that what was taking place was “going to be really good.” The rest, as they say, is history. Damon then shares a story about returning to that bench years later with his children, who were too young to know its significance in their father’s life, as well as recent cinematic history.

Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne is currently in theaters.
