Martha Plimpton Says 'Goonies 2' Is Still Unlikely

Add Martha Plimpton to the list of Goonies cast members who are skeptical about a sequel. In a Reddit AMA to promote her ABC comedy The Real O’Neals, the actress — who was 14 years old when she filmed the fan-favorite comedy — said that Goonies 2 was pretty unlikely to happen.

“I wish I had an answer for you, but I can tell you that I really wouldn’t expect it,” Plimpton wrote, in answer to the inevitable “What’s going on with the Goonies sequel?” question. “It’s been teased for decades and I don’t think it’s going to happen. At least, as far as I know. I think [director] Dick Donner, who is a brilliantly funny man, likes to torture us all with the prospect. I believe it’s his revenge for having been tortured by all of us for 6 months in 1984.”

That last line is a reference to how it was hard for Donner to wrangle the film’s rowdy ensemble of kids. During Empire’s 2009 Goonies reunion, Plimpton joked that the cast was “like one enormous, unwieldy child, all eight of us.”

Plimpton’s co-star Corey Feldman had a similar response to the Goonies 2 question this summer, adding that at this point, Donner probably isn’t up for a return to One-Eyed Willy’s grotto.

“Richard Donner is 87 years old. And it’s like, no one really wants to make it without him,” Feldman told Movieweb. “He’s the driving force behind it. He says it’s still alive. But as we all know… When you get to that age, things slow down quite a bit. There is a big possibility that he might not want to keep driving it.”

As Plimpton mentioned, Donner has enjoyed teasing the possibility of a Goonies sequel over the years, even telling TMZ in 2014 that he and producer Steven Spielberg were reassembling the whole cast. That obviously hasn’t happened, yet there are still Goonies who will never say die — namely, Sean Astin, who said last fall that he still believed in Goonies 2. “I have said and will always say, that it’s not a question of if, but rather of when the sequel gets made,” the actor declared. Astin also teased sequel details at this summer’s Phoenix Comic-Con, baffling his former co-star Feldman. “Unless Sean has a magic ball somewhere…one of those Magic 8 Balls which is telling him that One-Eyed Willy is going to be starring in a new Goonies film… I have no idea what he is talking about,” Feldman told Movieweb.
