Mark Walhberg is fielding an offer and is in early talks with Lionsgate to star in Deepwater Horizon, Summit and Participant’s telling of the BP oil disaster that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

J.C. Chandor, whose last release was the acclaimed Robert Redford drama All Is Lost, is directing the feature project, which is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian.

Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z) wrote the most recent draft of the script, whose story is set on Deepwater Horizon, BP’s oil rig in the Gulf. In April 2010, it caught fire and exploded, killing 11 crew members and resulting in the largest offshore oil spill in United States history.

Talks are in the early stages with Wahlberg having an offer, but no dealmaking has begun. Should a deal make, Walhberg will play a manager on the rig who tries to save his men.

The actor recently worked with di Bonaventura when he starred in Transformers: Age of Extinction, which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
