'Magic in the Moonlight' Trailer: Woody Allen Conjures Up Comedy in the South of France

Woody Allen is following up last year’s highly acclaimed Blue Jasmine with a new European jaunt, the romantic comedy Magic in the Moonlight, which is due in theaters July 25.

In the 1920s-set comedy, Colin Firth plays Stanley, an Englishman posing as an Asian magician who attempts to debunk fake spiritualists. He travels to the south of France to unmask a supposed medium named Sophie (Emma Stone) as a good-looking fake — but ends up falling for her real-world charms instead.

Moonlight had actually been in Allen’s hopper for several years. “I had it on a piece of notepaper in my drawer for ages,” Allen said to Entertainment Weekly in April. “I knew it was a good plot, but I kept seeing it as a contemporary thing and something about that just didn’t smell right to me. Then when it occurred to me it could be set in the south of France in the 1920s, all of a sudden it just felt good.”

Meanwhile, it appears that Emma Stone is now firmly in Allen’s creative orbit. In addition to Moonlight , she’s already signed on to his untitled 2015 film, which will co-star Joaquin Phoenix. After that infamous Amazing Spider-Man 2 ending, she’s definitely got some free time.
