Luchino Visconti’s Tuscany Estate Adds Farm Properties to Luxury Hotel

Castello di Casole, a vast, historic estate in the achingly scenic heart of Italy’s Tuscany region, near the fabled cities of Florence, Chianti, and Siena, has released a limited number of farm properties for purchase. Prices range from about $5.5 million to $8.5 million.

The estate, which encompasses more than 10,000 acres of picturesque rolling hills, broad valleys, and extensive vineyards and olive groves, was once home to the filmmaker Luchino Visconti, director of the Oscar-nominated drama “Death in Venice” (1971). Visconti’s brother purchased the property in the 1950s from the noble Bargagli family of Siena, who owned and farmed the land for centuries. Since 2005, Castello di Casole has been owned, operated, and modernized by Carbondale, Colo.-based Timbers Resorts, which carefully converted the estate’s original castle, dating to the 10th century, to a five-star hotel with 41 comfortably plush suites.

In addition to the hotel, Timbers has developed the estate to include fractional or whole ownership of a variety of residence types: hotel-adjacent villas, 28 farmhouses (each with a glass-tiled swimming pool), and 10 farm properties that span 100-160 acres of cultivatable land. Buyers can purchase one of the farm properties with an existing ruin ready for restoration, or they can opt to custom-build a new home. Each farm will be managed and maintained by the estate’s extensive agricultural team, which will plant and harvest crops at no expense to the owner.

Residents at Castello di Casole will have access to a full range of hotel-style amenities and creature comforts, including complimentary transportation to and from the airport, multilingual concierge services, preferential reservations at the resort’s restaurants and spa, daily housekeeping services, and a grocery shopping service that ensures a well-stocked kitchen upon arrival.
