Live-Action 'Jem and the Holograms' Comes Into Focus With First-Look Photo

Jem-mania is in full effect. Yesterday a grainy image of Jem and the Holograms, scanned from the new edition of Elle magazine, spread like a fire in the Starlight House. Today, we have our first official look at the live-action update of the chromatic ’80s animated TV show.

Responding to fan clamor, Universal has hastily issued the still of the film’s young stars Hayley Kiyoko, Aubrey Peeples, and Stefanie Scott, rocking out as, respectively, Aja, Jem, and Kimber. The studio also released the official synopsis for the film, which is being directed by Step Up vet Jon M. Chu:

“As a small-town girl catapults from underground video sensation to global superstar, she and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden. In Universal Pictures’ JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, four aspiring musicians will take the world by storm when they see that the key to creating your own destiny lies in finding your own voice.”

An official poster was released for the film last April (below), which in addition to featuring the three Holograms above, also gave us a brief look Shana (Aurora Perrineau). We’re still waiting for a glimpse at Molly Ringwald as Starlight caretaker Mrs. Bailey, though.
