Lin-Manuel Miranda Discusses How a Movie Adaptation of 'Hamilton' Should Be Cast

If a Broadway musical becomes popular, it gets made into a movie. Jersey Boys, Rent, Chicago, Les Miserables, Mamma Mia!, and Phantom of the Opera are just a few examples. Of course, we’re now in the era of a powerful new musical — even if you haven’t heard Hamilton in person, you’ve heard about it.

When Yahoo Movies attended the junket for Moana, our own Kevin Polowy asked Hamilton’s mastermind, Lin Manuel Miranda, about the chances for a cinematic adaptation. There’s good news and there’s bad news. It’s going to happen, but it’s going to take a while.

“We’ll see it, I think,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of people passionate about making it. That conflicts with my passion, which is to have as many people see it in the theater as possible. I feel like our job is to get productions up and get more people in the room where it happens, and somewhere down the line when everyone in the world has seen it, we’ll make a movie.”

Although the movie is only hypothetical at this point, we also asked Miranda what he’d want in terms of its cast. Would he prefer the original lineup? “I don’t know,” he admitted. “I think it’s up to whatever filmmaker having a vision. That’s what I respond to. It’s about… it’s an act of translation to bring something from the stage to the screen. So you want a filmmaker who’s got a really clear idea on how to do that.”
