'Firsts' With Lily James: The 'Cinderella' Star on Her 'Awful' First Audition and More

Lily James introduced herself to U.S. audiences on the hit drama series Downton Abbey, playing the Crawley family’s free-spirited cousin Rose. But her first major starring role comes this weekend as the title princess in Disney’s splashy new live-action take on Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

We figured the 25-year-old Brit the perfect person to debut our new interview series. In Firsts we ask breakout stars about, well, various key initial experiences they’ve had in their lives and careers.

And after hearing about James’s first job (bartending), her “horrible” first audition (for the Jack O’Connell miniseries The Runaway), first album bought (Shania Twain, which she also sings for us), and “terrifying” first time on the red carpet, you might feel like you know her as well as her fairy godmother.

Cinderella opens everywhere Friday.
