Lena Dunham and Anna Kendrick Babysit in New 'Happy Christmas' Clip

Anna Kendrick and Girls creator and star Lena Dunham explore their maternal sides in this exclusive clip from Happy Christmas. It’s the new film from writer-director Joe Swanberg, who previously worked with Kendrick on last year’s boozy ensemble comedy Drinking Buddies.

In Christmas, Kendrick plays Jenny, a directionless twentysomething who has to move in with her brother (Swanberg), his wife (Melanie Lynskey), and their young son. Jenny calls on her old college pal Carson (Dunham) to help her babysit, and the two examine their complex opinions on motherhood.

Swanberg’s style is to make his films truly collaborative. He wrote a 15-page outline for Happy Christmas, and then allowed the actors to improvise all the dialogue in their scenes. He also got his family in on the act: That’s the director’s two-year-old son Jude in the scene with Dunham and Kendrick. “I don’t think he had any idea what was going on, other than Mommy and Daddy were having some friends over and we were doing something,” Swanberg told the press. “We could just let him play.”

Happy Christmas is available on demand now and will be in select theaters on July 25.
