Watch Anna Kendrick Sing Her Heart Out in 'Last Five Years' Trailer

Anne Hathaway may have the Oscar, but Anna Kendrick is shaping up to be the greatest movie-musical actress of her generation. Here’s a new trailer for The Last Five Years, one of three new Kendrick songfests coming to theaters in the next six months. Like Into the Woods (the upcoming Disney musical in which Kendrick plays Cinderella), The Last Five Years is based on a popular stage musical, and is sung-through, meaning it contains more singing than spoken dialogue. But that’s where the similarities end. The Last Five Years is a contemporary, intimate love story about a couple, aspiring actress Cathy (Kendrick) and writer Jamie (Jeremy Jordan from Smash), who fall in love, get involved, and break up over the course of – you guessed it! – five years. The film tells their story in a series of songs by composer Jason Robert Brown, but there’s a twist: Cathy’s side of the relationship is told looking backwards, while Jamie begins at the giddy beginning. This trailer gives us a nice preview of the film’s songs – and honestly, it’s great to see a trailer for a musical in which the characters are actually shown singing (ahem, Into the Woods and Annie.) The Last Five Years opens on Valentine’s Day 2015, right on the heels of Into the Woods (December 25) and a few months before Kendrick’s next musical, Pitch Perfect 2 (May 15).
