Fresh Off the Boat is getting some unique praise at an especially opportune time. As ABC mulls renewals and series orders for the coming season, May 2 is being declared "Fresh Off the Boat Day" in Los Angeles.
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti is set to announce the news Thursday, one of several events planned around Asian American Pacific Heritage Month. The critical darling is also being honored by the Asia Society of Southern California on May 7 and releasing a comic book timed to its Stan Lee episode on May 6.
As for the day in L.A., the city is recognizing the cast and executive producers for their positive portrayals of Asian-Americans in the media. When it premiered in 2015, the comedy was the first Asian-American-fronted TV series for a broadcast network in nearly 20 years, since Margaret Cho's All American Girl briefly aired. The Asia Society is applauding the show with its event at the Skirball Cultural Center.
Fresh Off the Boat, which stars Constance Wu and Randall Park, wraps its third season on May 16.
