'Knight of Cups' Star Christian Bale Never Got a Script for the Movie

Director Terrence Malick works in mysterious ways, as Christian Bale found out first-hand during the production of Knight of Cups.

The Oscar-winning Welsh actor plays an exhausted and unmoored screenwriter in the mercurial filmmaker’s moody new drama. The audience doesn’t learn much more information than that — and neither did Bale, who went through the entire production without a formal screenplay. (Watch the video above.)

“Character was all that we talked about,” Bale told Yahoo Movies. “He talked to me about the various relationships — just a little bit — and then said, ‘Off you go, see what you come up with.’”

Bale didn’t even know who he’d be acting alongside in the film — and sometimes, didn’t even realize he was working with actual actors. “Shea Whigham, who I’ve since become friends with — Terry told me he was his cousin from somewhere else and just go chat with him,” Bale confessed.

The film — which features plenty of cameos from both A-listers and working actors — hits limited theaters on Friday. As Bale himself said, it’s a great film for stoners.
