Kevin Smith Reveals DC Multiverse Talk Cut From Dawn Of The Justice League Special
Even though DC Comics and Warner Bros. executives have made it very clear that the DC Comics movie and TV worlds are separate universes, a popular fan theory has always been that these two worlds could exist in a multiverse and eventually crossover in a Crisis on Infinite Earths-type event.
In the recent Dawn of the Justice League Special on The CW, there was a segment on Ezra Miller playing the Barry Allen version of The Flash in the movies, which is the same version that Grant Gustin plays on The Flash TV series. However, there was no talk about if the two Flashes could ever meet in a multiverse story… at least not any talk that actually made it into the special.
On the most recent Fatman on Batman podcast, Kevin Smith talked about the great experience that he had hosting the Dawn of the Justice League special. Among the topics Smith discussed was a particular conversation that he had with DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns that was cut from the special.
“We saw Ezra Miller, who’s playing movie Flash,” said Smith. “And we had shot for those that follow this sort of thing…you know, I’m a big f***ing Flash fan, huge Flash fan… I’ve been talking about like why are they f***ing… we talked about it on the show… why the f*** would you create a new Flash in the movies, with all apologies to Ezra Miller who’s a great actor, but like you’ve got a Flash audience and Grant is f***ing phenomenal and stuff.”
Smith continued, “And we did a piece where we talked about, I don’t know how much I’m supposed to say because they cut it out, and I was kind of bummed they cut it out. But the idea of, ‘Hey man, DC is known for nothing if not a multiverse,’ so at which point I was like, ‘Could they f***ing crossover?’ And he was like, ‘Ahhhhh.’ So doors are being left open and stuff like that for… think about this, you can have Ezra Miller be The Flash and you could also have Grant be The Flash, because there’s a multiverse at work.”
Smith didn’t comment on why the segment was cut from the special. It’s very possible that it was just cut for time considerations. But then again, maybe it gave away too much about where the DC movie and TV universes are heading? Would you like to see the DC movie and TV universes crossover in a multiverse story?
