Kelly Ripa & Michael Strahan Win Emmy For Most Awkward Acceptance Speech This Morning

UPDATE with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan reaction: Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan this morning walked out on stage each carrying an Emmy statuette, answering last night’s most pressing Daytime Emmy Awards question: “How will Kelly and Michael divide that Emmy?”

While there has been a lot on which they have disagreed in the past couple weeks, the Live With Kelly And Michael hosts were in perfect sync this morning as they told viewers they had not been aware the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony was happening over the weekend. That is, until congratulatory emails began to arrive. At last night’s ceremony, they were named best Daytime Talk Entertainment Show host.

Because the ceremony has moved to Los Angeles, they explained, they cannot attend. On the bright side, Ripa reminisced that when it used to be held in New York, it could be pretty uncomfortable having the cameras on her all those years she was nominated for various roles in daytime TV but did not win. But, of course, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has remedied that situation – this year’s trophy show was not broadcast, or live-streamed.

Ripa and Strahan thanked the crew and execs behind their syndicated show for making their win possible.

PREVIOUS, SUNDAY, 5:47 PM: For a second time, Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan took the win for best among entertainment talk show hosts at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

Ripa and Strahan were no-shows at tonight’s ceremony in downtown Los Angeles which, again this year, was not televised, which may account for them being MIA.

Speaking of MIA, Live With Kelly And Michael has had daytime drama of its own, when Disney announced a couple weeks ago the act is busting up this month, after four years, so Strahan can head to ABC News’ Good Morning America full time. Ripa, informed just 30 minutes before it hit the press, went MIA from the show for two days, turning the media’s attention from him to her just like that.

After she returned to work, last week, talking of the importance of respect in the workplace, the company said it would take Strahan off the show this month, instead of in September, as had been announced. It’s presumed producers decided they should get his replacement settled in as quickly as possible, what with Ripa’s contract coming up in 2017 and her being mad as a wet hen as to how in-the-dark she’d been kept during the whole process of moving Strahan to help shore up GMA ratings. The execs’ decision seemed to have been confirmed to be the right one this past week, when the show was visited by a screaming (literally) hairy armadillo and Ripa said she wanted the ear-piercing creature to represent her in contract talks.

“I don’t think they’re here… Will accept on their behalf – and Kelly and Michael will share it!” presenter Dr. Oz quipped during the ceremony tonight.

Ripa and Strahan won the same derby last year at the Daytime Emmy Awards, created in 2014 when the category Outstanding Talk Show Host was split in two: one for Entertainment Talk Show Host and one for Informative Talk Show Host.
