You’d think that directing an Oscar-nominated indie would inevitably lead to bigger Hollywood projects — or, you know, at least a big-screen follow-up. And yet that hasn’t been the case for director Courtney Hunt, who made a splash with 2008’s Frozen River (which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and nabbed Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Melissa Leo), and has yet to deliver another feature. That’s all set to change, however, with the arrival of The Whole Truth, which now has released its first trailer (watch it above).

In Hunt’s courtroom thriller, Keanu Reeves plays a lawyer tasked with defending Mike (Gabriel Basso), who’s accused of murdering his father (James Belushi). As much as it would appear to be an open-and-shut case on the surface — Mike has confessed to the crime, and the victim was an abusive monster to both his son and his wife (Renée Zellweger) — the trailer suggests Mike might be taking the rap for his mom. If it sounds like the trailer spoils the story’s big twist, that’s because it sure seems to — which, in turn, makes us suspect/hope that there’s even more going on in this legal thriller than meets the eye.

Did Mike do it? Was it his mom? What if Belushi’s character just fell on the knife? The Whole Truth’s trailer seems to raise more questions than it answers, though we’ll know for sure when the film arrives in theaters and on VOD on Oct. 21.
