The New 'Jurassic World' Teaser Looks a Whole Lot Like 'Alien'

The latest 30-second TV ad for Jurassic World above seems like it’s positioning the upcoming Colin Trevorrow-directed flick as the spiritual sequel of another iconic sci-fi series: Alien.

Most of the trailers and clips from the new Jurassic Park sequel, which opens in theaters on June 12, have concentrated on its realistic-looking digital dinosaurs, the majesty of the theme-park island, and the charisma of star Chris Pratt. This new spot amps up the suspense and the terror involved in a maniac dinosaur rampage, with plenty of moments that should remind astute audiences of directors Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s landmark space creature features Alien and Aliens, respectively.

First and foremost, the spot prominently features a scaly creature poking its claws out of a large egg, and then slowly emerging with a menacing look that no infant should ever have, regardless of the species. This is an obvious reference to what has become the Alien saga’s logo: A xenomorph egg slowly hatching below:

Another very obvious call-back is the moment we’ve seen already in previous trailers, in which a battle-ready, tank-top-clad Bryce Dallas Howard, as resort manager Claire Dearing, is revealed standing behind a slow-rising door.

We’d bet it’s no coincidence that she’s looking more than a little like Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in her iconic scene from Aliens:

The rest of the trailer has unmistakable hints of the Alien series dark, relentless, foreboding tone, emphasizing the sheer terror inherent in having gigantic monsters hunting down helpless humans in an enclosed space. As sci-fi inspirations go, it’s definitely a worthy one. Let’s just hope Jurassic World doesn’t include any references to Alien: Resurrection.
