Julianne Moore, Ellen Page Fight for Gay Rights in First 'Freeheld' Trailer

The trailer for Freeheld (above) offers a first look at Oscar winner Julianne Moore and Ellen Page as a real-life New Jersey couple who fought for marriage equality a decade ago.

Moore plays police detective Laurel Hester, who, after being diagnosed with cancer, sought to make her pension available to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Page). The couple faced off with the county legislature, known as “freeholders,” to make right the injustice — a timely topic given the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage in all 50 states.

Michael Shannon plays Hester’s work partner, who helps the couple rally community support along with a key activist, played by Steve Carell. From the look of the new footage, the performers — all four of whom have been nominated for an Oscar at least once in their respective careers — appear in top form.

Based on an Academy Award-winning documentary short and directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), Freeheld enters select theaters Oct. 2 and expands nationwide on Oct. 16.
