J.K. Rowling Says Harry Potter Is 'Done'

Harry, Ron, and Hermione have just made a triumphant return in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the nominal eighth installment in the popular fantasy series, which over the weekend made its official stage debut in London. Those hoping that this production would initiate a new round of Potter fiction, however, are in for disappointment, as author J.K. Rowling has revealed that, at least for now, she’s finished with the famous boy wizard.

As reported by Radio Times, at the premiere of Cursed Child — a two-part play showing at London’s Palace Theatre — Rowling told press that she doesn’t foresee any future Potter adventures, saying:

“[Harry] goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we’re done…This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now…It chimed perfectly with the material I had about the next generation and I could see it would work perfectly. So I never wanted to write another novel, but this will give the fans something special.“

While Rowling’s announcement will no doubt bring its fair measure of doom-and-gloom reactions from the Potter faithful, it also means that Cursed Child will become an even hotter ticket than it already is (it’s sold out until mid-2017) — as well as stoke demand for its printed script, which finally went on sale on Saturday. Those clamoring for more magical action in Rowling’s universe will otherwise have to satisfy themselves with the franchise’s new spin-off series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (from a Rowling script), which just debuted a new trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, and is primed to be one of this holiday season’s biggest movies when it debuts on Nov. 18.
