Jennifer Lopez Reveals Her Suggestion for 'Home' Character: 'She Should Be a Little Bit Shapely'

Most actors lending their voices to animated movies don’t get much say in what their character actually looks like it, be it a human, animal or alien. But apparently when you’ve got a voice as famous as Jennifer Lopez’s, you get a little more clout.

Lopez explained to Yahoo Movies what kind of influence she had on her character’s appearance in the DreamWorks Animation adventure Home, about a young girl named Tip (voiced by fellow pop star Rihanna) who befriends a quirky purple E.T. named Oh (Jim Parsons). J.Lo voices Tip’s mother, Lucy, but her involvement with the character didn’t stop there. “They showed me early renderings of what they were going to do with [Lucy],” the singer-actress said. “And I was like, ‘Well she’s from the islands. I feel like she’s a little bit generic … she should be a little more shapely, and she should wear a bit of jewelry. And her hair looks like a newscaster. Can you change that?’”

As MSNBC pointed out last week, Home marks Hollywood’s first 3-D animated film to feature a black lead. “That’s awesome,” Lopez responded. “I think it’s important that we see life as it is. It’s very reflective of our community, and our world right now… it’s good to see that so people recognize themselves. Because we all know that we identify with movies, and we make judgments about ourselves from what we see in movies. So it’s healthy that we see good, positive role models that look like us.”
