Jason Statham Puts More Villains in a Fix in First 'Mechanic: Resurrection' Trailer

Jason Statham may have taken a brief break from his usual grim-and-gritty routine to poke fun at his stoic-badass movie persona in last year’s Spy, but as the new trailer for Mechanic: Resurrection confirms, that hiatus is about to end in severely brutal fashion.

This August, Statham will reprise his role as Arthur Bishop, an assassin of almost superhuman skill, in the follow-up to 2011’s The Mechanic, which was a loose remake of a 1972 film starring Charles Bronson.

Watch a quick promo for the original ‘Mechanic’ starring Charles Bronson:

This time around, Statham’s killer has retired from the murder business, but is blackmailed into taking out a series of high-profile targets by a villain who’s kidnapped his girlfriend, played by Jessica Alba in the expected revealing bikinis. Less predictable is the participation of Tommy Lee Jones sporting a bushy soul patch that may stand as the year’s most unintentionally funny facial hair.

From Statham perilously scaling the exterior of a skyscraper (and its glass-bottom swimming pool) to his slow-motion leap off the top of a gondola car, the star seems to be in fine over-the-top heroic form in Mechanic: Resurrection, which looks like the sort of late-summer release aimed at delivering stripped-down no-nonsense goods. Moreover, it will likely serve as a suitable (if potentially formulaic) combat-heavy warm-up before Statham reprises his villainous part in next summer’s Fast 8.
