Jason Mitchell to Receive San Diego Film Festival Honor

The San Diego International Film Festival has selected “Straight Outta Compton” actor Jason Mitchell as the recipient of its Rising Star Award, Variety has learned exclusively.

The award will be presented Sept. 29 at the festival’s Night of the Stars Tribute at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. The festival will run Sept. 28-Oct. 2.

Mitchell portrayed Eazy-E in Universal’s “Straight Outta Compton” and won the African American Film Critics Association Award for supporting actor. The movie’s cast was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award for best ensemble.

Mitchell was working at a New Orleans restaurant when he auditioned by Skype for director F. Gary Gray. He appeared in “Keanu,” which starred Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

Mitchell just wrapped a lead role in “Mudbound” opposite Jason Clarke, Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund with Dee Rees directing. He can next be seen as co-lead in “Skull Island” for Warner Bros. and Legendary opposite Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Sam Jackson, John C. Reilly and John Goodman.

The festival screenings will be held in the Balboa Theater and Regal Theaters in downtown San Diego, and ArcLight Cinemas in La Jolla.
