Strand Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to James Franco and Travis Matthews’ “Interior. Leather Bar,” a reimagining of the 1980 Al Pacino thriller “Cruising.”

The drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Strand is planning a release for late this year or early next year.

Project is inspired by the rumored 40 minutes of gay S&M footage edited out of the original cut of “Cruising.” Val Lauren portrays the Pacino character.

“Cruising” was directed by William Friedkin and based on the novel by Gerald Walker.

Producers are Franco, Matthews, Vince Jolivette, Iris Torres and Keith Wilson. Franco and Matthews directed from Matthews’ script.

The deal was negotiated with Marcus Hu and Jon Gerrans for Strand and Jason Ishikawa and Andrew Herwitz for the Film Sales Co. on behalf of the producers.
