Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels Yuck It Up in 'Dumb and Dumber To' Trailer

It was 1994 when audiences first heard Jim Carrey make the most annoying sound in the world. Twenty years later, the Farrelly brothers’ willfully idiotic comedy Dumb and Dumber is finally getting a sequel, the appropriately named Dumb and Dumber To (in theaters Dec.19). The new trailer reveals that To will pick up where the first film left off, in a sense: Carrey’s character Lloyd has spent the past two decades in a mental hospital, faking insanity as a practical joke on his pal Harry (Jeff Daniels). When Lloyd finally gives up the gag, the Dumb duo get up to their old gross-out antics: Catheters are forcibly removed, animals’ butts are examined, and an old lady is subject to treatment that might be more appropriate in a red-band trailer.

Dumb and Dumber To seems to be sticking close to the original’s formula: the road trip, the scandalized wealthy strangers, even the haircuts. That should please fans of Dumb and Dumber, who have been waiting for this sequel through countless production delays and a questionable spin-off (2003’s Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, which was made without Carrey, Daniels, or the Farrellys). Shortly after Dumb and Dumber To was officially announced in 2012, Carrey dropped out of the film; a year later, he was back in, but Warner Brothers dropped the whole movie. The film is now being released under Universal and Red Granite Pictures.

A lot has changed since Dumb and Dumber first hit theaters, but the original film has enough cult cachet that it might resonate with a new unsuspecting audience. (Jennifer Lawrence, who has a cameo in the sequel, is a fan). You know what they say: Every generation gets the Dumb and Dumber it deserves.
