Is George Miller About To Direct Green Lantern Corps?

As DC’s ‘Green Lantern Corps’ searches for a director, the hotly tipped name doing the rounds is none other than ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ helmer George Miller.

According to Heroic Insider’s podcast, presenter Umberto Gonzalez claims to have some information that’ll no doubt get ‘Green Lantern’ fans more than a little excited.

“Let me tell you what I’m hearing – I know something, I heard something yesterday. The hot rumour is George Miller… Boom! George Miller is being rumoured to direct the Green Lantern Corps movie, and I think it’d be perfect for him, are you kidding me? George Miller. Again, it’s just a rumour right now, I just literally heard this yesterday.”

While the claim’s complete speculation, the idea of Miller directing the forthcoming movie is an exciting prospect. “Mad Max in space,” as the presenters describe it, would be intriguing, considering how successful he was remaking his own ‘Mad Max’ movie which scooped half a dozen Oscars earlier this year.

However, while Miller’s name is allegedly the one bandied around Hollywood at the moment, Ain’t It Cool’s Eric Vespe has since tweeted the following: ‘Just got word from a very, very high up source that those George Miller Green Lantern Corp rumors are “bogus."’

Despite Tyrese Gibson declaring his interest in the Hal Jordan role, no actor has been officially cast for any part in the film yet. What’s more, it seems that’s unlikely to happen any time soon, especially when it’s got no director in place.

The 2011 Ryan Reynolds-starring ‘Green Lantern’ is, for many, a distant, unpleasant memory. Not only did it almost kill the recently reprised career of said actor, but it tainted the franchise after it received scathing reviews from fans and critcics alike. Further to that it completely tanked at the box office, taking an embarrassing $220 million from a $200 million budget (meaning it would have needed to earn around $400 million just to break even).

Could ‘Green Lantern Corps’ breathe new life into the character and erase Martin Campbell’s horrendous directorial effort from memory? If Miller were to board the project, it’d certainly stand a good chance.

‘Green Lantern Corps’ is released in the US on 19 June, 2020, and at present has no UK date confirmed.
