The first project on the slate is The Nib, a short form animated series based on the political cartoon site of the same name created by Matt Bors. Powell will also develop a short form scripted series created by Cirocco Dunlap, a writer and performer whose credits include The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Man Seeking Woman, and The New Yorker Shouts and Murmurs. Powell is also in negotiations to write a feature-length drama based on a pre-existing property.
“Dan has a lot of gears,” said First Look Media EVP of Programming & Content Adam Pincus. “He’s great with comedy of course, but he’s got real feel for drama and animation, regardless of whether it’s TV, digital or features. He writes, directs, and is great with talent — he is pretty much the ideal kind of creative person for us to be in business with, given the range of things we’re doing here.”
“I am very excited to have a first look deal at First Look Media because I like companies that take their names literally” said Powell. “Also, I like that they have a smart and energetic team that is determined to create funny, compelling, subversive new content for a variety of platforms.”
In addition to the deal with Dan Powell, First Look Media’s upcoming slate includes: the feature film We Do Not Forget from writer-director Zach Helm, set to star Daniel Radcliffe with Antoine Fuqua producing; and a feature film script from writer Oliver Kramer, among others. Recent First Look Media projects include: director Laura Poitras Cannes film Risk; the weekly political podcast Politically ReActive with W. Kamau Bell and Hari Kondabolu; director AJ Schnack’s docu-series on the Presidential campaign, NomiNation, published on VanityFair.com, as well as its longer form version, Primaries, which debuts September 25 on Fusion; and the currently in post-production Untitled Patriot Movement Documentary from Morgan Spurlock.
