In Theaters This Weekend: A Tale of Two Ewan McGregors, 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'T2 Trainspotting'

Disney naturally looks like the early contender for box office champion this weekend with their live-action retelling of the animated classic, Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the titular Beast, Luke Evans as Gaston, and Ewan McGregor as everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic candlestick, Lumière. The masterful Bill Condon is in the director’s chair for the picture that has already caused controversy after it was revealed that Josh Gad will be playing a gay character.

Much like the characters trapped in the film’s deadly game, The Belko Experiment has divided critics into opposing sides– those that appreciate its fun genre horror, and those that see it as a failure from the concept onward. Tony Goldwyn, John C. McGinley, John Gallagher Jr., and Adria Arjona will try to survive the James Gunn-penned screenplay that he opted not to directed because of the violent subject matter.

Of the two Ewan McGregor releases this weekend, T2 Trainspotting appears to be the better bet with its “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Danny Boyle and most of the original cast return for the 20-years-later update to the drug-addled Scottish romp that provides an “emotionally resonate” coda to the first film.
