Imax to Release 'Star Trek Into Darkness' in 3D Early May 15

TORONTO – Imax has inked a deal with Paramount Pictures to offer J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness in its 3D format from May 15 – two days before the wide release on May 17.

Imax earlier signed a deal with Paramount to release the picture from May 17, so additional negotiations have led to the pre-release.

Imax, which released the first Star Trek franchise picture, on Sunday said it has started selling tickets for the exclusive run of the latest installment.

"As we saw with the reaction to the first nine minutes of the film, which debuted in our theaters in December, fans are clearly excited by the opportunity to see this epic film come to life in Imax," said Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Entertainment, in a statement Sunday.

The Imax release of Star Trek Into Darkness will feature around 30 minutes of footage filmed with its proprietary cameras.
