Idris Elba Trains Child Soldiers in Netflix’s ‘Beasts of No Nation’ First Trailer

Idris Elba trains child soldiers in the first full trailer for Netflix’s original movie “Beasts of No Nation.”

“I will always protect you because you’re my son and a son always protects a father,” Elba tells his newest soldier in the gripping trailer.

The film follows a young West African boy named Agu (Abraham Attah), who’s forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters when civil war tears his family apart. Elba plays an African warlord known as the Commandant, who attempts to transform Agu into a ruthless killer.

Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga, who most recently directed and exec produced the first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” helmed the harrowing drama adapted from Uzodinma Iweala’s 2005 novel.

In our cover story this week, Elba and Fukunaga recalled nearly dying while filming “Beasts.”

The film world premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. Our critic Justin Chang wrote that “Beasts of No Nation” is “the rare American movie to enter a distant land and emerge with a sense of lived-in human experience rather than a well-meaning Third World postcard.”

The pic will also screen at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals. It hits select theaters and Netflix on Oct. 16.
