Idris Elba in Talks to Star in ‘The Mountain Between Us’

Idris Elba is in talks to star in the romance drama “The Mountain Between Us” at Fox 2000.

Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike were previously attached as the leads.

Hany Abu-Assad is directing the film, while Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are producing through Chernin Entertainment.

The project is based on Charles Martin’s 2010 bestselling novel about a surgeon and woman who fall in love after being stranded following a plane crash when the pilot has a heart attack mid-flight. They must figure out how to get out of the mountain wilderness, where the temperature drops to the teens at night, while suffering broken ribs and a leg fracture.

“Star Wars: Rogue One” writer Chris Weitz wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, and J. Mills Goodloe and Scott Frank penned earlier drafts of the script.

Elba won two Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 25 for supporting actor in “Beasts of No Nation” and for actor in a TV movie or miniseries for the crime drama “Luther.” He was snubbed by the Oscars for “Beasts.”

He will be seen in July in “Star Trek Beyond” as the villain Krall. Elba is repped by WME and Hertz Lichtenstein & Young.

The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
