Hugh Jackman's 'Real Steel' Movie Becoming Real Life

The new season of BattleBots premiered, and it got one step closer to Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel movie. For the first time, a humanoid robot entered the ring, and it was controlled pretty much the same way as Hugh’s robot in the movie.

The humanoid robot’s name is Obwalden Overlord, and its creator, Rob Knight, explained how it works. “The Obwalden Overlord is designed to mimic a person,” he said. “We puppet it from outside, and it copies our movements. It has all the same anatomy as a person. It has ball-and-socket joints; it has the same muscles; it has the same ligaments.”

While all of that may sound kind of terrifying, we’re a long way from the Overlord taking over mankind. The technology is really cool, but it’s pretty early for the robot to be winning any BattleBots championships. Its first opponent, Warhead, annihilated OB Overlord and torched it so much that many of its parts started to melt. So there’s no need to worry about a robot apocalypse just yet.

BattleBots airs Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
