How Jesse Eisenberg Came Up With His Version of Lex Luthor

Much like the titular characters in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, famed villain Lex Luthor has popped up onscreen in different incarnations over the years. Gene Hackman famously portrayed him in 1978’s Superman and 1980’s Superman II, and Kevin Spacey later took the reins for 2006’s Superman Returns.

The honor now goes to Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network fame. He sat down with Yahoo Movies and talked about the new approach that he had to the role.

“I think it’s a new take, not so much because of my skill set, just by virtue of the character being written today. I think the take on Lex Luthor is kind of a modern psychological profile,” he said. “In past movies maybe he has come off more generalized just because it was of that time. And so I think this take on it looks like, I think to me, somebody who is a chilling, troubled person.”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens Friday, March 25.

Watch: Ben Affleck on the possibility and timing of directing his own Batman movie.
