Happy RoboCop Day, Everyone!

If you’ve been thinking about acknowledging the fine work of your neigborhood cyborg police officer, there’s no time like the present! A group of ardent RoboCop fans (assisted by some clever marketing types), have declared it RoboCop Day in the city of Detroit (the setting of both the 1987 film and the 2014 remake). Though the movies portray their city as a crime-ridden urban wasteland, Detroiters are seemingly psyched enough about the release of the new RoboCop Blu-ray and DVD to make it an all-day celebration.

Sadly, what was supposed to be central event — the unveiling of a ten-foot bronze RoboCop statue created via Kickstarter campaign — was cancelled by the Detroit Police Department at the last minute. This may have something to do with the fact that the statue has yet to find a permanent home and was never sanctioned by Mayor Mike Duggan in the first place.

RoboCop, fortunately, is not one to be daunted by a change of plans. So far today, the mechanized crime-fighter has given the weather forecast on local news station Fox 2, fist-bumped the Joe Louis monument, and paid tribute to Detroit’s non-cyborg heroes at the Motown Museum. Tonight, he’ll throw the first pitch at the Tigers-Blue Jays game at Comerica Park, winning the hearts of hundreds of children who’ll be utterly traumatized when they go home and actually watch the movies. But hey, any event that honors Peter Weller — even indirectly — is fine by us.
