'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Has a New Draw for Fans: It's 'WhatWeShotWednesday'

Let it be known that Wednesday is no longer “hump day.” Henceforth, it shall be known as “Groot Day,” a change made possible by Guardians of the Galaxy mastermind, James Gunn. This week, the writer/director behind one of Marvel Studios’ most anticipated sequels, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (due in theaters on May 5, 2017), launched the #WhatWeShotWednesday campaign, whereby he’ll post a storyboard of the scene they’re shooting on his Facebook page. “Over the entire film I draw thousands of these thumbnails,” Gunn wrote in his inaugural post. “Many of you asked to see these drawings so I thought I’d start posting thumbnails of whatever it was we shot that day. I’m not going to explain what the shot is. But maybe you can match the thumbnail to the shot when the movie is released.”

That’s a challenge eagle-eyed Marvel Zombies will likely accept, even when the scribbled image is as seemingly inscrutable as the above shot that Gunn posted on March 15. While it’s apparent that we’re looking at a lil’ Groot–possibly in flashback, since the words “Time Cut” appear above him–what he’s clutching is up for debate. Is it a plant-based lifeform, like himself? Or some kind of alien fish? An mysteriously elongated Rocket Raccoon? Whatever it is, it sure doesn’t like being held by this tiny tree-man, violently wriggling what appears to be a tail and squealing “Aaah!” Don’t expect answers from Gunn, but add a midweek check for new storyboards to your to-do list while the film is in production. Now, we just need Gunn to figure out a way to re-brand other days of the week with Guardians-related teases. Our pitch: “Funky Friday,” with weekly videos of the cast boogying to ‘70s hits. Make it so, Mr. Gunn.
