'Guardians 2' Cast and Crew Reveal What's New in the Sequel — Like That Cranky Baby Groot

Given that its predecessor snagged an astounding $333 million at the domestic box office in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has enormous expectations to live up to when it arrives in theaters next summer. And amidst debuting new footage from the film at last weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, stars Chris Pratt and Kurt Russell, as well as writer/director James Gunn, chatted on the red carpet about what to expect from the sequel. (Watch the video above.)

Speaking to Yahoo Movies’ Kevin Polowy, Pratt confessed that “It’s a complete departure from the first movie. The only thing that it has in common is that it’s totally going to surprise people, and people are going to love it.” Okay, he also admits that it’ll feature some of the same characters and it’ll be staying cosmic — but otherwise, fans should expect an all-new experience from this follow-up, which will also introduce Russell as Ego, the living planet and the supernatural father of Chris Pratt’s wise-cracking, Footloose-loving hero Star-Lord.

And then, of course, there’ll be Baby Groot, whom Gunn divulges a little bit about (tantrums, anyone?). “He has some anger issues,” says Gunn. To hear everything the Guardians cast and crew had to say about their upcoming out-of-this-world adventure, check out our video interviews above.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 blasts into theaters on May 5, 2017. You can read about its Comic-Con sneak peek clips here.
