It has been five years since Johnny Depp’s foppish, rum-soaked Captain Jack Sparrow stumbled his way through the high-seas adventure of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Yet as the brand-new teaser for his latest outing proves, that time off doesn’t seem to have changed a single thing about his circumstances.

In next summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Depp will again don his bandanna and trinkets for a movie that finds Sparrow compelled to hunt for the mystical Trident of Poseidon — a weapon that’s his only means of defeating Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), a ghostly marauder intent on killing Sparrow and any other pirate who stands in his way. In the film’s first promo, we don’t even see Depp’s eccentric hero. But Bardem’s spectral villain — who rampages through a ship to deliver a message to Sparrow via a captive played by Brenton Thwaites — makes it clear that the fifth installment in the enormously profitable Disney series will again pit its protagonist against a ghostly adversary in a tale of ominous, otherworldly action.

Given that On Stranger Tides earned more than $1 billion at the global box-office — including $241 million in the U.S. — it’s clear that, for many, there remains plenty of life left in the Pirates of the Caribbean saga. (Depp’s last big sequel, this summer’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, was a bust at the box office and was released right around the time of news about his ugly split with Amber Heard.) Dead Men Tell No Tales, which also brings back Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, debuts in theaters on May 26, 2017, and while more elaborate trailers are sure to arrive soon, you can check out its first teaser above.
