‘Ghostbusters II’ Predicted the End of the World on Feb. 14, 2016 — Happy Valentine’s Day!

Sure, it’s not quite Back to the Future Day, but Feb. 14, 2016, has its own special resonance in the movie-fan universe. That’s one of the dates given as a potential end of the world in 1989′s Ghostbusters II, back when 2016 sounded suitably far-off in the future.

Of course, before you cancel your Valentine’s Day plans, we should probably consider the source: The date comes during an early scene in the sequel when we see all the Ghostbusters gone-to-seed. They were put out of the busting-business when they wrecked New York City at the end of the first movie. (Watch the scene above.) Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) is hosting a lo-fi, low-rent TV show called World of the Psychic, and he welcomes two apocalypse-predicting guests. The first is Milton (Kevin Dunn), who wrote a book about the end of the world arriving on New Year’s Eve (”That’s cutting it a little bit close, isn’t it?” asks Venkman). And the other is a woman named Elaine (Chloe Webb) who says her source — an alien on a sojourn at a Holiday Inn in Paramus, NJ — told her the date would be Feb. 14, 2016. “Valentine’s Day. Bummer,” says Venkman, speaking for all of us.

Still, we wouldn’t worry too much if we were you. As Venkman notes, you can’t really trust aliens.
