Get Ready to Orc Out With the First 'Warcraft' Trailer

Nearly three years after the film was announced, the first trailer for director Duncan Jones’ Warcraft movie has finally been revealed.

The CGI-heavy adaptation of the popular video-game franchise looks to be massive. The plot is a classic medieval tale, with a fantastical twist: The human residents of the realm of Azeroth see their peaceful home come under attack from marauding Orcs, who leave a dying homeland and attempt to conquer another.

The humans are led by King Llane Wrynn, played by Dominic Cooper (Captain America, The Devil’s Double); Anduin Lothar, portrayed by a bearded Travis Fimmel (History Channel’s Vikings); and Medivh, a hero brought to screen by Ben Foster (presumably without the aid of steroids).

On the other side, the Orcs are repped by Durotan (Tony Kebbell, who played Victor von Doom in Fantastic Four) and Garona (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol star Paula Patton). Weta, Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning special effects studio, did all the motion capture for the Orcs, which should please Lord of the Rings fans. But Jones — who last directed the cult hit Source Code — told Yahoo Movies earlier this year that, despite the massive number of CGI shots, he hopes to break the curse of video-game adaptations by focusing on story more than visual splendor.

“I can’t even begin to explain about what happened to previous video-game movies; I’m sure they took them seriously but something was missing from those movies,” Jones said at Comic-Con. “I wanted to tell a war story from both sides, and allowing the audience to really empathize and care about both sides, and the fact that there were heroes who could not find a way to avoid this conflict. That to me doesn’t have to be a video game. That could be a story told in any genre. The fact is that it fit beautifully with Warcraft.”

We’ll see how it turns out when Warcraft is released on June 16th, 2016.
