George Clooney's New Coen Brothers Hairdo is a Nod to the '90s

George Clooney will Rome if he wants to. In new photos from the set of the the Coen brothers’ forthcoming comedy Hail, Caesar!, Clooney sports the hottest hairstyle in ancient Italy — which also happens to be a cut that Clooney popularized himself in the 1990s. We haven’t seen the Caesar haircut on Clooney since his ER years, as he’s spent the last few decades shifting styles. Here, a quick look back at George Clooney’s history in hair:

The Facts of Life mullet years (est. 1985-89)
Young Clooney had long, flowing curls worthy of a ‘70s rock star – but since he rose to fame in the ‘80s, it was all business in the front, party in the back.

The ER/From Dusk Till Dawn Caesar (est. 1994-96)
The perfect haircut for fighting vampires or performing emergency pediatric surgery.

This inexplicable platinum-blond spikey thing (1998)
Let us never speak of it again.

The Out of Sight slicked-back look (1998)
He wasn’t yet a Dapper Dan Man, but Clooney knew how to work some hair gel.

The Three Kings military style (1999)
When in doubt, Clooney goes short on the sides, long on the top.

The Syriana sad-dad look (2005)
Who’s scruffy-looking?

The Cary Grant side-part (2001-13)
Ever since Ocean’s Eleven, Clooney been defaulting to minor variations on this old Hollywood style. And it has served him well.

In addition to his Caesar haircut, Clooney’s latest look features some pretty goofy-looking Roman garb, including studded leather armor and gladiator sandals that lace up his calves. That’s because Clooney’s Hail, Caesar! character is not actually an ancient Roman emperor; rather, he’s a fifties matinee idol starring in a Hollywood epic. The film follows a group of actors in the golden age of Hollywood, whose many personal scandals are kept under wraps by a “fixer” (played by Josh Brolin). Writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen have assembled a remarkable ensemble cast for the film (set to open in February 2016), including Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, and Jonah Hill. Whether they can top Clooney in the haircut department, however, remains to be seen. Et tu, Tilda?
