Gareth Edwards Compares ‘Rogue One’ to ‘The Wizard of Oz’

A group of misfits on a secret military mission. That’s basically the premise of Rogue One, but does it remind of you any other film? If you’re familiar with it, The Dirty Dozen most likely came to mind. Released in 1967, the film has become suddenly more relevant in 2016. Rogue One seems to draw from it, and Suicide Squad definitely did.

When Yahoo Movies sat down with Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, we asked what inspiration the film gave the Star Wars team, and, well, his answer just might surprise you. “It was in terms of it was a mission movie and it was a group of people,” Edwards told our Kevin Polowy. “But it’s not like a list where you go, ‘Here, we’re going to go get these people.’ I personally found films like The Wizard of Oz a parallel as well. You have this woman who’s on this journey and along the way, people end up joining or coming together.”

Edwards said that a lot of different stories had to be distilled into this movie. “We started off with the basis of a military movie, like a mission movie,” the Godzilla filmmaker noted. “But if you just have that one genre and stick Star Wars on it, it’s not Star Wars. You need this other mix of things. You need the fairy tale. You need the biblical epicness. You need the sci-fi.”
