'Furious 7' Zooms Past 'Avengers' in Box-Office Billions

In a blockbuster battle in which there are no real losers, Furious 7 has pulled slightly ahead of Marvel’s The Avengers in worldwide box-office receipts.

The supercharged sequel has earned $1.512 billion worldwide as of Tuesday, according to Box Office Mojo, giving it a $2 million advantage over the 2012 superhero assembly. It is by far the most money that the franchise has ever made, continuing its unlikely slow-burn success story, and now ranks No. 3 on the all-time list, behind only Avatar ($2.788 billion) and Titanic ($2.186 billion).

It’s also unlikely at this point that the Vin Diesel-led thriller will be passed by May’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. While the superhero reunion has proven more popular in the U.S. than Furious 7, making almost $100 million more at home ($449 million to $351 million), the worldwide audience should keep the car caper out in front in the long run.

This battle may be moot, though, because Jurassic World figures to blow both films out of the water. The fourth film in the dinosaur franchise beat the first Avengers for the biggest opening weekend of all time, and has already made $1 billion globally in just 10 days in theaters. And, well, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will probably beat them all.

Still, kudos to Furious 7, which has not only paved the way for more Fast and Furious films, but has now spawned an action-packed attraction at Universal Studios. The movie hits home video platforms on Sept. 15.
