Instant Commentary: James Wan Explains How They Parachuted Cars in 'Furious 7'

There are a few expectedly insane action sequences in Furious 7, but none more delightfully ludicrous than the one in which five cars go “skydiving” after being ejected from a C-130 aircraft. Universal made the full scene available early to whet appetites in advance of the film’s release, so we asked director James Wan to walk us through the stunt and reveal how in the world they pulled it off. Watch the video above to get his moment-by-moment analysis.

The scene was a welcome challenge for Wan, 38, the Malaysia-born filmmaker best known for horror hits like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring — all technically impressive movies but none of which feature cars plummeting from the clouds.

"One of the things I wanted to do with this was make it as scary and dangerous-looking as I could, but obviously without putting the actors in harm’s way, " said Wan, before explaining his approach to the sequence. A guy with his track record clearly knows how to make it scary.

Furious 7 opens Friday.
