9 Mind-Blowing Moments in the New 'Divergent' Trailer

Forget jumping off a train. That’s the easy stuff when it comes to the new "Divergent" trailer.

Shailene Woodley and Theo James star in the hotly anticipated adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling book series. The setting: a futuristic Chicago where people are divided into groups called Factions based on their personal leanings towards bravery, caring, selflessness, honesty, and intellect. The drama: only life or death. No big deal.

We’ve seen clips from the film before that helped us to understand the world of “Divergent” and what it means to be Divergent – different, and therefore in great danger. But now we’re seeing a bit more of the story.

And it’s kinda blowing our minds. Here are the nine moments that had us gasping for air, in chronological order:

1. The Mirror! Our girl Tris (Woodley) hails from the Abnegation Faction, where selflessness rules the day. As the teen prepares to head into the aptitude test that will determine which Faction she was meant for, her mom (played by Ashley Judd) fixes her hair and – gasp! – Tris gets to take a very rare look in the mirror. As part of Abnegation, caring about one’s physical appearance isn’t part of the deal, which also explains the dowdy gray outfits she and her family wear.

2. The Test! Tris looks nervous as she gets strapped into a medical chair to take her aptitude test, which starts with sipping a serum. From a quick glimpse a little earlier, we see Tris’s curiousity about the Dauntless Faction, but we also sense her loyalty to her Abnegation family. She’s clearly hoping the test will give her answers. After all, “The future belongs to those who know where they belong,” explains a creepy Kate Winslet.

3. The Breakthrough! In one of the most thrilling moments from the new trailer, we see Tris in the middle of her test… and she’s trapped in a water tank with seemingly no way out. But suddenly Tris gets a true sense of herself and remembers that it’s all a test. “This isn’t real,” she says, and taps the glass until it breaks.

4. The Results! It turns out, breaking the glass was a dangerous move, and made the results “inconclusive.” The test “didn’t work” on Tris, as the test giver – whom we’ll later learn is Tori (Maggie Q) – explains. This means Tris is Divergent. And that is no good. Tori tells Tris to “hide where they’d never expect to find you.”

5. The Choice! Apparently, “they” think that the Abnegation are wusses, because it turns out that place “they’d never expect to find you” is Dauntless, as we learn when the handsome Four (James) welcomes us there. You know, after Tris is the first to jump off a tall building. Baller. When that’s soon followed by Tris getting her butt kicked by Peter (Miles Teller), she’s not so baller.

6. The Knives! Being Dauntless isn’t just about physical toughness though, and Tris soon proves she’s got the mental thing down pat. Girl barely flinches as her soon-to-be man tosses knife after knife at her head. Take that, Peter!

7. The Tension! As Four talks about tension (he’s referring to muscles, but whatevs), Tris looks at him like he’s the dreamiest thing ever (and he might be – we’ll leave that for you to decide). Then we see him grab her arm and declare, “I know what you are.” Yikes! Does he know she’s Divergent? So scary! Regardless of whether or not Four knows the truth about Tris and her aptitude test, he clearly likes her. A lot. “It’s been a long time since I could trust anyone,” he confesses (swoon!).

8. The Admission! Four shows Tris his (muscly) back covered in tattoos of all the factions and explains, “I don’t want to be just one thing. I want to be brave, and selfless, and intelligent, and honest, and kind.” Wait a sec – is he Divergent too?!

9. Get It, Girl! The final moments of the trailer show Tris ready for action, but there’s only one that elicited a whoop! from this writer. Peter taking a Tris elbow to the face! Take that, jerk!

Divergent" arrives in theaters on March 21.
