‘Force Awakens’ Whips ‘Spider-Man 2’s Monday U.S. Record With $40.1M; Global B.O. At $610.8M – Update

2nd/3rd UPDATE , TUESDAY, 6:40/8:55 AM: Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens racked up a global Monday of $81.8M raising its worldwide run to $610.8M. In the U.S./Canada, Force Awakens’ $40.1M Monday at 4,134 venues, blew away Spider-Man 2‘s $27.7M previous Monday high by 45% taking its domestic tally to $288.1M. Jurassic World was the fastest film to cross $300M at the domestic B.O. in eight days. Well, Force Awakens is going to easily cross the three century mark tomorrow in a record five. Many projected a huge Monday for Force Awakens given the fact that 73% of K-12 schools are on holiday recess as well as 87% colleges.

In second place stateside was 20th Century Fox’s Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip making an estimated $2.98M at 3,653 per industry calculations, raising its four-day cume to $17.3M. Universal’s Sisters made $2.5M in third at 2,962 theaters for a four-day take of $16.5M.

As we saw last year in our analysis about how we’re on course for an $11B domestic B.O. year, 2013, the last high watermark, averaged in excess of $53M a day during the final 11 days of the B.O. year. Yesterday, 15 top-ranking titles on the chart generated in excess of $52M. This moves total ticket sales for 2015 to $10.45B to date.

Overseas where Force Awakens counted $41.7M upping hits foreign cume to $322.7M, the J.J. Abrams-directed movie posted its highest grossing Mondays ever in Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, UK/Ireland and Ukraine. Below is breakdown of the foreign cumes in major territories:

1st UPDATE, Monday, 4:09PM: It’s not going to stop. After breaking the weekend, opening day, Sunday, and Thursday night records Star Wars: The Force Awakens is looking at taking the Monday title with $30M-plus per non Disney analysts. Afternoon figures for Episode VII are strong ranging in the $17M-$22M range.

As opposed to Friday when there were only 4.8% schools off, today that figure has blown up to 73%. Force Awakens’ Monday is set to take down Spider-Man 2‘s all-time Monday record of $27.7M which it has held since July 5, 2004. The next-highest Mondays belong to Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull‘s 2008 Memorial Day ($26.8M) and Jurassic World ($25.3M). Disney finaled its opening weekend for Force Awakens at $247.97M.

Distribution sources have wowed at how deep Force Awakens has played at its 4,134 sites. Typically, there’s only a portion of theaters which do business on any major tentpole, but in the case of Force Awakens, approximately 800 venues grossed more than $100K for the weekend, while just under 2,500 posted $20K or more.

Word is, that despite Force Awakens’ presence in the market, exhibitors will shut their doors early on Christmas Eve as is their tradition. That day is considered to be one of the worst grossing days of the year, however, some titles such as Daddy’s Home and The Hateful Eight are going to get an early start Thursday night.

Last year, Universal previewed Unbroken at 1,979 playdates for $850K evening gross while Disney’s Into The Woods made $1.1M on Christmas Eve. Each grossed in excess of $46M over four and half days.
