Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche Defy Convention in the 'Words and Pictures' Trailer
Flying in the face of all Hollywood conventional wisdom, apparently you can make a movie about human beings over the age of 40 who don’t have superpowers. It can even be about ideas and feelings and not feature a single transforming robot or alien invasion. It doesn’t even need to be based on a young adult bestseller or have a number in the title.
Defying all those cinematic mandates is “Words and Pictures,” an upcoming romantic film starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche. Owen plays Jack Marcus, a former literary superstar now teaching English and trying his best to keep his students’ eyes away from their smartphones. Sparks fly when he meets the new art teacher Dina Delsanto (Binoche), who argues her abstract art can say more about the human condition than the written word can.
It’s the first collaboration for Owen and Binoche in their award-winning careers, though it almost happened once before. Reportedly, Binoche was considered to play the lead role in “Elizabeth” before it eventually went to Cate Blanchett, and Owen co-starred in the sequel “The Golden Age.”
Binoche hasn’t totally abandoned massive Hollywood spectacles, though. The week before “Words and Pictures” hits theaters, she’ll be appear with another giant movie star: Godzilla. She co-stars with Bryan Cranston in the new version of the classic monster movie this summer.
Directed by Fred Schepisi (“Roxanne,” “Six Degrees of Separation”), “Words and Pictures" opens in limited release on May 23.
