Here's Your First Look at 'Terminator: Genisys'

The future of the Terminator franchise is here, and it involves lots of big guns and black leather. Entertainment Weekly’s new cover stars are the cast members of Terminator: Genisys, the first in a planned trilogy of movies that will re-launch the sci-fi series. The first EW cover features Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as robot-fighting revolutionary John Connor, Matt Smith (former star of Dr. Who) as a mysterious ally, and one of the Terminator franchise’s namesake cyborgs in the background. The second cover features Emilia Clarke, best known as Game of Thrones’ “mother of dragons” Daenerys Targaryen, as another mama you don’t want to mess with: Sarah Connor, mother of future savior-of-humanity John Connor. (Yes, her character is younger than John’s character in this movie. The wonders of time travel!)

Connor was first portrayed by Linda Hamilton in The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)and was briefly embodied on the small screen by Clarke’s HBO co-star Lena Headey in the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009). However, thanks to some manipulations in Terminator’s time-hopping back story, the Sarah Connor of Genisys is a very different character than audiences have seen before: She’s a reclusive orphan who was raised to be a soldier, by none other than the original Terminator, now nicknamed "Pops," and played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ahnuld, sadly, doesn’t appear in these photos, though we do get to see Jai Courtney (Divergent) in the role of love Sarah’s interest Kyle Reese. Set in 2029, Terminator: Genisys opens in theaters on July 1, 2015.
