'Fifty Shades' Trailer Takeaways — Like, Does Christian Grey Remind You of Patrick Bateman?

Did the new trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey that premiered last night sate your desire? The longer clip expands on some of the scenes featured in the enticing first trailer, but doesn’t provide much in the way of salacious new material: There’s a lot more conversation, a little more sex, and a slightly longer tour of the Red Room of Pain. Still, we did spy a few moments that the many fans of EL James’s source novel — about kinky billionaire Christian Grey who falls for college student Anastasia Steele — will surely recognize:

Will Anastasia sign?

There are first glimpses of Jennifer Ehle as Anastasia’s mom (on the phone asking her daughter if she’s met someone) and Eloise Mumford as Anastasia’s pal Kate (who sets the plot in motion by sending Anastasia to interview Christian for the college paper). The most important first look, though, wasn’t a person at all: It’s a flash of that very detailed contract Christian wants Anastasia to sign before they enter an official S&M relationship. We know how important it is because of the fancy font Christian uses for the many mentions of the word “submissive.”

Can we get a closer look at Christian’s chest?

But not for the reasons you think! Christian alludes to his traumatic childhood in the trailer, and one of key elements in the novel is the scars he still has on his chest. The marks weren’t very apparent in the first teaser, but here we get a full-on shot that simultaneously shows off Jamie Dornan’s physique and the scars that Christian still carries.

Is Christian Grey supposed to remind us of Patrick Bateman?

I’m not sure why I didn’t notice this in the first teaser, but Christian’s longer voiceover and obsessively arranged walk-in closest in the new clip bares an unmistakeable similarity to fellow master of the universe, American Psycho's serial-killing Wall Street raider, Patrick Bateman. Don't believe me? Refresh yourself with Bateman's morning routine and tell me there aren't a few shades of Grey:

Perhaps it’s because Dornan (who’s Irish) and Christian Bale (who’s English) are both adopting blandly over-enunciated American accents. Or perhaps it’s because Dornan has actually been playing a serial killer of his own in the British TV series The Fall. Secret softie Christian Grey has got something other than murder on his mind of course, but it’s yet another reason to think Anastasia should watch her step.
